The sports and recreation nonprofit reignites the spirit of competition with safe, in-person programming
CHICAGO, IL — Dare2tri welcomes veterans and active service members with physical disabilities and visual impairments to its 2021 Injured Military Training Camp. Following a hiatus due to the pandemic, the Illinois-based, non-for-profit organization continues its mission of empowering individuals through adaptive sports with new, stringent COVID-19 safety guidelines.
From June 3rd through 6th, the Injured Military Camp will conduct paratriathlon training at the Munster High School and Wolf Lake Park located in Northwest, Indiana. The camp will include high-level instruction from certified coaches and mentor athletes. Injured Military Camp is open to military personnel with disabilities such as amputation, spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, PTS, and those with visual impairments and blindness.
“Dare2tri is excited to continue to enrich the lives of the community by shattering the outdated mental constructs of physical ability,” Keri Serota, co-founder & executive director, said. “With Injured Military Camp being one of the first of our in-person programs in 2021, we’re honored to introduce a community of veterans and active military with physical disabilities to a program dedicated to nurturing mental health through a willingness to succeed,” She concluded.
Injured Military Camp is supported by Deloitte, Move United, VA Adaptive Sports Grant, and the Department of Defense. The program concludes with Leon’s Triathlon, a race that pays special tribute to active and retired military on June 6th.
In addition to Injured Military Camp, Dare2tri’s return to in-person programming will include a Level II Paratriathlon Coaching Certification and, as part of Leon’s Triathlon, a Paratriathlon Development Series, both in partnership with USA Triathlon.
Funded by Move United and the Veteran’s Affairs Adaptive Sports grant, The Level II Paratriathlon Coaching Certification will be held from June 2 to June 6 in Munster/Hammond, IN. The program will prepare ten triathlon coaches to serve para-athletes and injured veterans with hands-on experience. Following certification, the attendees will be required to host a clinic in their communities for injured service members and veterans.
